Laurie Swim
Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada
My studio/gallery is in a heritage building at the entrance of Old Town Lunenburg,
a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Nova Scotia’s south shore. The building
I am in is a wooden flatiron building. I recently moved to this space and have
been gradually making it what I need. I have a younger assistant, Clarissa, who
works with me and keeps me company without intruding. I hang my works as they
are produced in the front room that adjoins the studio. This room is boat shaped
at the front, overlooking the street coming into town. The rooms have tin ceilings
that were made by the tinsmith who built the building for his business in the
early 1900s.
The gallery space for me is where I can quietly gather my thoughts and look
at my work as others will see it. Since it is a storefront, visitors can drop
by to see the work as it is being created and, later, the finished piece. In the
studio, we have two workstations with sewing machines, two design walls, a table
for cutting, another for ironing, as well as two more for painting and layout
of the work in progress.
