WEB EXCLUSIVE:
Victoria May Blouse Series
California artist Victoria May’s series, Adaptations, featuring headgear designed to symbolically represent the “mental constructs that people tailor for themselves in adaptation to their life experiences,” is featured in our January/February 2005 issue. May, who studied design and photography and used to make custom wedding gowns, also created this series of blouses.
The idea for this series came from May’s past experience in creating custom tailored gowns. She specialized in following the contours of each individual’s body, no matter how “imperfect.” Every imperfection of the client was revealed by precise measurements and accommodated for. These blouses, rather than hide imperfections, reveal ones that only exist in the mind and are never visible. These garments translate the insubstantial beliefs that shape behaviors, which we wear every day, into revealing garments.
